Chaplain Services and Emotional Support

Chaplain Services:

There is an increasing recognition in the community, healthcare and education sectors to support the emotional, cultural, religious and spiritual identities of individuals. In the daily change inherent in life, including its joys and challenges, people grow and struggle.

Who is a chaplain and what is their role?
A chaplain embodies a compassionate companion, a non-judgmental friend and an unbiased coach. The chaplain can be seen as a bridge between the individual’s own spirituality and the challenges being faced by drawing upon their own deep understanding and practical application of the many dharmic traditions and philosophies.

The role of a chaplain is to provide emotional and spiritual care, listen to concerns, offer prayer or religious rituals when appropriate, and help individuals, families and/or communities cope with the emotional and existential aspects of physical illness, emotional stress, suffering and spiritual strife while keeping in mind individual/group beliefs and needs.

Emotional care is provided through facilitating verbalizing of emotions, meaning, purpose, hope and community support.

Spiritual care is through delving into each person’s individual beliefs, practices and connection to the divine thereby drawing into the person’s inherent strength and spirituality.
Spiritual and emotional support is provided utilizing different tools and techniques such as active listening, art, music, poetry, storytelling and scriptures.

The following are the underlying principles
Ekam sat vipra bahuda vadanti
The truth is one, people call it by many names
Manva seva Madhava seva
Service to humanity is service to God

Emotional Support:

Emotional support plays a crucial role in maintaining mental well-being, as it provides individuals with the reassurance, empathy, and care they need during difficult times. It often comes from friends, family, or support networks, offering a safe space to express feelings and be understood. This support helps to reduce stress, enhance resilience, and foster a sense of belonging, making people feel valued and less isolated. Whether through listening, comforting, or offering encouragement, emotional support can significantly improve one’s ability to cope with challenges and navigate through life’s ups and downs.
